Visual field analysis is utilized to test both central and peripheral vision. The visual field machine is an extremely beneficial tool to have in the optometric clinic. The testing is done on site at Island Eyecare by one of our trained professionals and then reviewed by the optometrist with the patient. It is one of the most highly diagnostic devices available of its kind.
There are several purposes for the visual field analyzer. The primary use is to monitor glaucomatous changes which occur with the disease thereby allowing the optometrist to better manage the condition. In conjunction with comprehensive eye exams, visual field testing allows for the monitoring of progression of the disease before it affects vision. Therefore, the optometrist is able to provide treatment and preserve your sight.
Some medications can also affect vision but are necessary to control the underlying condition. Visual fields are used to monitor any subtle changes in the eyes even before the perception of sight is affected. The optometrist at Island Eyecare comanages with general physicians and, when necessary, alters the dosage of medication.
Visual field testing is important in checking driver vision functionality as well and is sometimes required by the department of motor vehicles. It is convenient to be able to come to Island Eyecare and have this testing done rather than making an appointment with an ophthalmologist.
At Island Eyecare, we will always let you know if you require visual field testing. This testing is covered by the BC medical services plan and is provided to you at no additional cost.
