(OCT) Optical Coherence Tomography
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a medical imaging technique that uses light to capture three-dimensional images from within biological tissue. Utilizing near-infrared, long wavelength light, OCT is used in ophthalmology to capture detailed images of the retina.
Island Eyecare’s ability to provide comprehensive eye exams includes our OCT machine. It is imperative to giving us a detailed image below the surface of the retina so we can detect change early. The earlier we can diagnose retinal disease, the quicker we can treat it and prevent vision loss.

We know that up to 80% of vision impairment can be prevented by early detection. As a result of our detailed exams and our state-of-the-art technology, we are able to accurately diagnosis and treat eye disease early – maintaining your vision and eye health.
The OCT exam takes just a moment. Nothing touches your eye as you look into the machine; though, in some instance we may need to use some eye drops to make your pupils a little larger. This examination can aid in the early detection and monitoring of eye diseases as physical symptoms may not be evident on the surface of the retina.
When to have an OCT exam
It is recommended that you have full eye exam at least every two years. However, if you are over 65-years-old or have a current condition a yearly exam is better suited to your needs. If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms we suggest you call for an appointment:
You are unable to see the detail on faces
Trouble reading or an inability to concentrate on fine print
Straight lines appear bent or wavy
Patches in the centre of your vision
